Venango Trail Preserve: A Natural Burial Ground at Lutherlyn

For over a decade, the Lutherlyn Board of Directors has been considering the addition of a Natural Burial Ground at Lutherlyn.  A Natural Burial Ground is a cemetery that takes into account our impact on what God has created.  Conventional burial usually involves concrete vaults, metal caskets, and harsh chemical embalming.  A natural burial ground does not use any of these.  Instead, bodies are buried in a simple wooden casket or shroud.  Because there are no vaults or expensive caskets, natural burial is often less expensive than conventional burial.

In addition, the burial ground eventually returns to its natural, forested state and becomes habitat for native flora and fauna.  To allow this process to commence, the grave sites are not mowed and only flat, fieldstone markers are used.

This natural burial ground would give individuals the opportunity to make Lutherlyn their final resting place, and return to the earth in a natural state, nourishing and preserving the land.  The land that has been set aside for this endeavor is a field along Dick Road not far from Chapel Rock.
