
Saturday Safaris
Lutherlyn Saturday Safaris are a great way to spend Saturday mornings! They are designed and open for families of all sizes and shapes as well as scout groups and youth groups. The only requirement is that there is an adult responsible for all children.
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (additional maple session from 1-3:30pm)
Place: Environmental Education Center at Camp Lutherlyn
Cost: $5.00 per person (children ages 4 and under are free). Payment will be collected at the event.
This fee includes the program, snacks, and beverages.

Here's What We Have Planned:

February 2, 2013: Wolves
This science-based educational program about timber wolves will include information about habitat, pack function, management and the controversy surrounding wolves in North America. We will talk about similarities and differences between wolves, domestic dogs, and coyotes. We will listen to recorded howls, and observe skulls and pelts. Related games and/or activities included. This safari is led by Laura DeYoung, member of the Timber Wolf Alliance Speakers Bureau.

March 2, 2013: Dogsledding Canceled
Join the Butler Reading Council and Born to Run Sled Dog Club for an exciting presentation about the history of dog sledding in Alaska, past and present. You will learn about the start of sledding, the Great Serum Run, and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Kids (and adults) will listen to a story about sledding, and can enter a drawing to win books. An AKC-registered Siberian breeder will discuss the breed, and you will get to see a sledding demonstration, even if there isn’t any snow!

March 9, 2013: Maple Sugaring
This Saturday Safari features winter tree identification, tapping a maple tree, collecting sap, and observing the evaporation process.
Dress to be outside.
There will be a morning session from 9:30- 12:00 and an afternoon session from 1-3:30.
Please register for one session only.

November 2, 2013: Archaeology
Western Pennsylvania history comes alive as participants unearth artifacts, clean what they have found, and try to identify these clues to the past. At our archaeological dig sites, artifacts have been found dating back one thousand years!
